The "Carbonia 3D - Digitization of Cultural Heritage" project
Carbonia 3D – Digitization of cultural heritage is a project for the digitization and enhancement of the cultural, archaeological and urban heritage of the city of Carbonia.
Funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) – Mission 4, Component 2, Investment 1.5 – "Innovation Ecosystems", the project is part of the actions of Spoke 2 of the E.INS – Ecosystem of Innovation for Next Generation Sardinia programme.
The initiative integrates laser scanner surveys, photogrammetry and 3D modeling to document and make sites of particular historical, cultural and tourist importance accessible online, promoting new ways of digital use of heritage.
Purpose
The project was born with the aim of preserving and disseminating the historical, industrial and environmental memory of Carbonia through the use of advanced digital technologies. Three-dimensional models and immersive tours allow citizens, schools, researchers and visitors to virtually explore places of cultural value, even in contexts that are difficult to access, contributing to the knowledge of the territory and the promotion of sustainable cultural tourism.
Operational objectives
The project is divided into the following main objectives:
-
Digital preservation of the heritage, with reference to the sites of tourist importance subject to the intervention, including the Great Mine of Serbariu – Coal Museum, the Museum of Paleoenvironments, the Littoria Tower and the Urban Park of Cannas di Sotto.
-
Accessibility and inclusion, through the creation of a single digital platform in which to consult 3D models, information content and educational materials.
-
Innovation and research, through the use of three-dimensional acquisition and visualization techniques to support study, documentation and dissemination.
-
Territorial enhancement, strengthening the positioning of Carbonia as a cultural destination and promoting collaboration between the municipal administration, cultural institutions and local subjects.
Expected results
At the end of the project, the following will be made available:
-
a unified digital platform, which brings together four digitized sites and their immersive experiences;
-
bilingual descriptive sheets (Italian and English) for each site, with historical, cultural and contextual information;
-
supporting multimedia content (images, videos, virtual tours) at the service of educational and research activities;
-
tools for monitoring use, useful for evaluating the use of the platform and guiding future digitization interventions.
Funding and communication
The project is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
Expected impact
